The only two operational Spitfires in New Zealand will make a rare double appearance at the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow at Easter.

Show organisers said New Zealand had two of the world's 45 airworthy Spitfire fighter aircraft and both would take to the Central Otago skies.

The owner of one Spitfires, Doug Brooker from Auckland, said in a statement it had been flying regularly until damaged in a minor mishap near Masterton.

Repairs were now complete and the two-seater fighter would be back in the air soon and on track for its Wanaka debut.

The second Spitfire was the first to be restored in New Zealand and was owned by the family of New Zealand fighter pilot Alan Deere, who served with the Royal Air Force.

The restoration took five years. The Mark IX Spitfire flew again in March.

It was built in 1944 and served with the Royal Air Force in Italy. About 70 other aircraft were also expected to take part in the airshow, which the organisers said would be the biggest in the event's history.
