It was the lowest turnout of competitors so far, from a high of 38, which was put down by organisers to people suffering from winter ailments.

The course was reversed for the challenge and the race duration was 50 minutes plus one lap.

The top three podium-finishers scored eight laps each. Fraser crossed the finish line at 1hr 6min, followed by Redwood at 1hr 10min and Woodward at 1hr 14min.

Cyclocross is a combination of mountain biking and road biking.

Organised throughout by the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, the fifth and final race will be held on the same course on August 28 at 10am.

Mr Vivian said: "It should be a close contest between Gavin Mason, of Wanaka, who won every race in the series, but was unable to compete [on Sunday], and Blackie."
