Stem cell treatment planned in resort

Stem cell treatment in Queenstown is not far away as one doctor-and-nurse combination hopes to bring the regenerative medicine technology to the resort by next year.

Dr Morne Pienaar and his business partner and nurse Marcelle Noble, of Queenstown Regenerative Medicine, introduced platelet rich plasma (PRP) tendon and muscle treatment in July.

The pair said they thought Queenstown was the ideal location for the future of muscle-healing medicine.

"Queenstown lends itself towards this business being quite successful. There is great demand for it and it is just picking up. It is a very active lifestyle here as well, so it is the perfect area for people to travel to for this type of treatment," Dr Pienaar said.

PRP involves taking 27ml of blood from the patient and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate blood cells from the "platelet rich plasma", which is then injected back into the source of injury to begin healing it. The procedure takes about 30 minutes from start to finish and Dr Pienaar said it was "extremely safe".

"If you compare it to taking oral anti-inflammatories, there is probably less of a risk in PRP. To date, we haven't had any complications. It's nonsurgical and uses the body's own regenerative and healing properties." Dr Pienaar said PRP had the potential to revolutionise sports medicine and orthopaedics.

"It is a breakthrough treatment in that it actually solves the problem. Steroids make you feel great for a day or two but [they do] nothing to the actual injury."

If anything, steroids probably made an injury worse, he said.

The patient might need two or three PRP treatments, depending on how chronic the injury was. The treatments cost $450 to $750, depending on the type of injury and where it was.
