Stevenson lending a hand

A former TVNZ newsreader will lend his voice to Queenstown's Anzac Day concerts this year - a World War 2-themed show, being staged as a radio show, performed in front of a live studio audience.

Dougal Stevenson, a fixture on New Zealand television screens in the 1970s and 1980s, will take on the role of a BBC newsreader in the show.

It is the second time the Queenstown RSA has staged a specially-commissioned Anzac Day concert.

The inaugural concert, in 2010, was a sell-out, so the decision was made to hold a concert every second year, increasing the number of performances to cater to demand.

Directed and written by Jo Blick, Music While You Work, named after the popular war-time BBC radio programme, would feature a large cast of Queenstown performers, along with the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra.

"We're giving the audience a look at what life was like during wartime for those who were on the home front and had to deal with things like rationing, evacuations and air raids," Ms Blick said.

"We're using songs of the era from artists like Glen Miller and The Andrews Sisters to set the scene, and the history will be explained by the use of regular updates from the newsroom, many of which are transcripts of actual BBC new bulletins of the time."

Ms Blick said the breadth of the subject had made putting the show together a challenging task - notably, condensing six years of history into 90 minutes.

"But I think we've put together a show that will make audiences laugh and cry as well as sing along and even, in some places, dance along, if they want to."

The show was doubling as a fundraiser for the Memorial Hall upgrade.

Ms Blick said it was appropriate a show celebrating community spirit was supporting a community asset.

It would not have been possible without the "substantial help" from the community, which had assisted in providing accommodation, sound, set building and lighting. The entire cast and crew were working for free to ensure all money raised went directly to the Memorial Hall Trust.

The cast includes Ms Blick, Alex Derbie, Andrew Edgar, Charlotte Graf, Eammon McNicholas, Tiffany Menzies, Marty Newell, Margaret O'Hanlon, Rachael Simons-Gerard, Richard Stringer, Lee van der Schuit and Steve Wilde
