In the first of our weekly winter series Off Piste, Luke Evans (25), from Essex, England, describes his job as a Coronet Peak host.

Q: What does your job involve?

A: I start the day meeting and greeting customers arriving at the base, helping direct them around the building, from guest services to get their lift passes, to rentals if they need equipment or to snow school.

One the great parts of my job is taking guests on free tours around the mountain at 11am and 2pm each day. It's a great way to show people around the mountain and see what Coronet Peak has to offer. Towards the end of the day,

I give out hot chocolates to warm guests up.

Q: What skills or experience do you need?

A: Customer service skills are essential and in general being friendly and helpful. Some tour guide experience is also useful.

Q: What were you doing before you joined NZSki?

A: I was working down in Queenstown as a restaurant supervisor on the TSS Earnslaw.

Q: Highs of the job?

A: Getting to meet different people every day. Skiing every day is also a great bonus!

Q: Lows of the job?

A: Ski tours in bad weather can sometimes be a bit challenging, but to be honest that doesn't happen very often anyway as guests are less likely to want to tour in poor conditions.

Q: Your most memorable skifield moment?

A: Being dressed up as a daffodil and skiing around Coronet Peak to collect and raise money for cancer research.

Q: Best part of living in Queenstown?

A: Apart from the incredible views, the social aspects of life in QT are amazing. The activities and sports around the town are great. I play badminton for Arrowtown Badminton Club and football for Frankton FC.

Q: Worst part of living in Queenstown?

A: The cold temperatures down in the shade.

Q: Best piece of advice for people who come here for the season:

A: Make the most of it - the season goes quickly, so enjoy it. Oh, and spend your money on wise things like a decent coat.
