In a report to the committee, district forester Briana Pringle said the cycle trails on Ben Lomond were gaining popularity within the community and internationally and were known by several different names, which "can be confusing and can have negative implications".
"There is value in giving the trails one name which can be used in print, online and through word of mouth," Ms Pringle said.
"There are now many bike trails in and around Queenstown, and the trails on Ben Lomond Reserve need to be identified with a descriptive name, such as the Queenstown Bike Park.
"The name gives direct reference to where the park is and the activity being carried out."
Ms Pringle said the name had come from discussions with the Mountain Bike Club, Skyline, Vertigo and bike park users.
Using "Ben Lomond" in the name of the park was discussed, but there was more than one Ben Lomond in the world: when Ben Lomond was searched on the internet, results were returned from Scotland, the United States and Australia.
"The name Queenstown Bike Park gives direct reference to where and what is being achieved.
"In regards to signage in the forest, the new name will not affect any of the current signage in the reserve and park, but any new signage moving forward will reference the name."
Ms Pringle recommended the committee approve the new name, a decision on which will be made tomorrow.
