Country music figures and occasional Wanaka residents Shania Twain (42) and producer husband Robert "Mutt" Lange (59) are to part.

A statement from Twain's Nashville-based publicist, Jason Owen, was sent to People Magazine yesterday.

"Shania Twain and her husband, music producer Robert Mutt Lange, are separating after 14 years of marriage.

This is a private matter and there will be no further comment at this time," Mr Owen said.

Twain - real name Eilleen Lange - and Lange bought the twin high-country stations of Motatapu Station (16,830ha), and Mt Soho (7901ha), near Wanaka, for $21.4 million in 2004.

She last made a public appearance in New Zealand, during March, to help Prime Minister Helen Clark officially open the Motatapu track, which crosses her land between Arrowtown and Wanaka.

They have a small and protective group of associates in Wanaka, who, when contacted by the Otago Daily Times, asked that the pair's privacy be respected.

Twain's former farm adviser Russell Hamilton said the pair were not at their Motatapu Station property.

He declined to comment further.

Twain has won five Grammys during a distinguished career guided by her producer husband.

The pair's intentions for their 24,731ha Motatapu Station home are not known.
