The Southern Lakes Real Estate project marketer plays ex-convict Jean Valjean and the musical follows his 20-year pursuit of redemption in early 19th-century France.
Mr Green said it was the ultimate role for a musical theatre performer, vocally and dramatically equal only with the Phantom in The Phantom Of The Opera.
"I had to do a lot of vocal work getting my voice fit enough to be confident to get through the show," he said.
"I rehearsed by myself for 30 or 40 hours before the audition and another 30 or 40 hours since, outside of rehearsals."
The director and producer of half a dozen theatrical productions also acted in national tours of Blood Brothers and Evita.
He is no stranger to Les Miserables, having performed in the chorus in Dunedin's production in 1994.
He also played Enjolras with Auckland and Invercargill troupes in 2001.
Mr Green said the cast of 36 had been encouraged to read the original book by Victor Hugo and they were all very excited about the season, which runs in the Queenstown Memorial Hall from May 13 to 23.
"I think this is the best locally-assembled cast Queenstown will ever see.
"The calibre of the leads in this show is definitely on a par, if not better, than any Les Mis production I've been involved with.
"It's a huge undertaking for a town this size. It will be a very good show and Doug [Kamo] is a very good director."
Tickets cost $30-$55, depending on seating and day. Children tickets are $10 less than the adult price.
