While iconic Lakes District road the Crown Range may be daunting for many motorists, for ace Kiwi driver ''Mad Mike'' Whiddett its mix of varied-speed bends and switchbacks offers the perfect opportunity to showcase his drifting skills.

In a recent promotional shoot for Red Bull, Whiddett put his bespoke quad-rotor rotary engine machine through its paces on the former state highway, which was, not surprisingly, closed to allow him to really put the hammer down.

And despite some disgruntlement amongst other users at the state of the road surface in the wake of his tyre-shredding exploits (see story here), Queenstown council spokeswoman Meaghan Miller says there was no damage done and any rubber marks would eventually fade.

For Whiddett, who competes in drifting events all over the world, conquering the Crown was ''a dream turned into a reality''.
