Wanaka bank suspect does runner with savouries

A 21-year-old woman was chased this week with loot she allegedly stole from a Wanaka bank - police said she fled with savouries.

The Canadian woman was arrested by police shortly after she allegedly fled the bank with an armful of afternoon tea - intended for a local chamber of commerce gathering.

Community Constable Mike Thomas, of Wanaka, said he was at the Westpac branch to attend the meeting.

"There were about 50 people there. Next thing, this girl bursts in through the [sliding] doors, grabs a load of savouries from a platter and does a runner," he said.

Const Thomas gave chase and caught the woman about three shops away.

The woman had been drinking, he said.

She was charged with theft and was due to appear in the Queenstown District Court on August 10.
