Agency owner Chris Major, of Queenstown, was asked for his tips for job seekers before the influx of working holiday visa holders arrives for the Wakatipu winter.
Mr Major said there were stories of teams of candidates undergoing free trial after free trial for the same employer, only to be told they were not successful.
"Very rare, it has to be said, in Queenstown but worth a chat to your agency before you do such a trial," he said.
None of the Athol St agency's clients exploited workers by expecting them to work without pay on a prolonged trial, but Mr Major said he heard on the grapevine some Queenstown restaurants were fond of the practice.
"Just use your intuition: if you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. Most people would do anything to get a job, but don't feel like that.
"Register with any job agency so they become your employer. We don't put them on free trials; we pay insurances to the employer; we handle any HR issues, or complaints."
Queenstown was the new focus for the company, which started in Wanaka eight years ago. The four-year-old Queenstown branch moved into larger premises two months ago and was already receiving the first seasonal workers for the winter.
The agency was fielding about 15 inquiries for work each day, but staff expected 40 to 50 walk-ins by the midwinter peak. The first wave of seasonal workers was arriving, he said.
"We are seeing a lot of South Americans and French candidates this year. And still a good number of British and Americans."
Mr Major said job-hunters should have a clear idea of they want to do and have the skills and experience to do it.
"You have to remember that you will likely be one of many people looking for similar work. Make yourself stand out by focusing on one industry or role type that you are good at, and can prove it," he advised.
Flexibility and being responsive were qualities sought-after for temporary work. "Often, the work comes in last minute and you need to be able to work, and work well, at the drop of a hat."
Mr Major said while available work was heavily focused on tourism, there were different roles most of the year round. Outdoor work, such as landscaping and the vineyards, would drop off, but construction, retail, hospitality and a number of events needed workers.
Passport, work visa and a brief resume or CV must be brought in to a job agency when registering, which was free.
