A bluebird day ensured smiles for miles at Coronet Peak yesterday, making the ski area’s final day for the 2017 season a humdinger.

Included in those getting their final runs in for the year was Queenstown resident Gerald Wyber, who had skied 74 of the 100 days this year, and Jack Stevenson, whose  efforts yesterday took him to 45 days on the mountain in the past four months.

Despite sometimes challenging weather,  Mr Stevenson was full of praise for NZSki.

"[They] have done an amazing job at keeping the snow going," he said.

Coronet Peak ski area manager Nigel Kerr said his first season in charge of the mountain had been "interesting", but he was stoked to have been able to keep all  the lifts operating  until yesterday afternoon.

"I’m quite happy.

"This is a good time to close."

Before joining NZSki, Mr Kerr was  Ngai Tahu Tourism’s regional sales and marketing manager. He had previously marketed Cardrona for 21 years and worked for Treble Cone for two years.

He told the Otago Daily Times yesterday his new role had been a learning curve.

"There are a lot of moving parts up here and getting my head around what they need to work and, I suppose, thinking about the whole infrastructure maintenance ...  of keeping things going.

"This mountain just goes from zero to hero so fast."

Coronet was forced to close for just two days this winter, which ‘‘doesn’t seem so bad’’.

Overall, there had been little wind and "very little snow" over the past four months — but when the snow did come, it was "fortuitous", he said.

His two major highlights had been Coronet’s 70th birthday party in July and the opening of the 2017 Winter Games in August.

As for down sides, they had been "few and far between".

"There are no negatives — they are opportunities to do a better job ...  be better at what we’re doing.

"There are a few things to learn from."

The Remarkables ski area is scheduled to close this Sunday.
