Arrest over jewellery theft

A 36-year-old man has been arrested in relation to a jewellery heist at Queenstown Central last weekend.

Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said the man was located by police in Lumsden on Friday afternoon in a "very suspicious-looking vehicle''.

Also in the vehicle was some of the jewellery stolen from Jamie's Jewellers on April 20.

Sgt Watt said the man had been charged with shoplifting from The Warehouse and burglary of the jewellers and had been remanded in custody.

The Otago Daily Times earlier reported the man made off with up to 15 men's watches valued at up to $1800 each, a laptop and $150 cash.

CCTV footage showed the man's face as he cased the premises, leaving for about half an hour and returning wearing a mask to smash his way in.

Sgt Watt said more charges were pending.

The man is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court on May 27.
