Assaults followed menacing text

An Australian tourist who punched two compatriots on a Queenstown dance floor had earlier threatened one of them by text message, police say.

The 21-year-old, who was arrested on Tuesday, will appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday to face two charges of assault and one of threatening behaviour. .

Sergeant Tracy Haggart said the men, who all knew each other, were on the dance floor of Winnies bar about 12.45am on Tuesday when the offender punched the first victim, cutting the inside of his lower lip.

He then punched the second victim, who had stepped in to help his friend.

The assaults followed an earlier altercation, after which the offender had sent a threatening text to the first victim, Sgt Haggart said.

All three men were visitors to the resort.
