Queenstown children involved in Lakes Leisure's holiday programme will be treated to a special opportunity next week, giving them a first-hand insight into what it is like to compete at the Olympic Games.

ANZ, one of the official sponsors of the 2012 New Zealand Olympic team, is taking a traditional double-decker London bus through 29 towns from Whangarei to Invercargill and will arrive in the resort next Thursday.

On board will be former New Zealand Olympic cyclist Sarah Ulmer, also an ANZ ambassador.

Sputnik spokeswoman Melody Brass said the bus would arrive at the Queenstown Events Centre at 1pm. A DVD highlighting Ulmer's achievements would be shown before she addressed the children.

A question and answer session before a "mini Olympic-themed quiz" would follow before the senior children, aged between 8 and 12, would get a chance to play with the equipment on the bus.

Ms Brass said a static rowing machine and bicycle had been set up on the lower level, on which children could check their times against New Zealand Olympic greats, with seats for their peers to cheer them on as they try to beat their heroes.

Upstairs, 12 iPads had been set up, allowing children to play games and take a picture of themselves to send with a message of support to the New Zealand Olympic team.

Lakes Leisure community programme and recreation manager Jendi Paterson said it was an "awesome" opportunity for all the children.

"Sarah Ulmer is a legend. It will be so cool for the kids to be exposed to that, coming up to the Olympics.

"We would have moved heaven and earth to get them here anyway, but it works so well because [of the holiday programme]."

After the school holiday programme event, Ulmer would join fellow former Olympian Hamish Carter and sports commentator John McBeth for an invitation-only event at the Queenstown Events Centre, sharing Olympic stories and predictions for London.
