The 20-year-plus relationship between Wanaka skier Jossi Wells and the Cardrona Alpine Resort will be celebrated with an invitational "big air" event next Friday  and Saturday.

New Zealand skiers and snowboarders will go head-to-head with a field of international "heavy hitters" in the  event.

A 23m big air jump has been constructed for the event, which will feature Winter X Games gold medallist Wells and overseas competitors, including James Woods, Noah Morrison and 2016 women’s snowboard slopestyle X Games gold medallist Spencer O’Brien.

Wells said he was honoured the event was being held on his home mountain.

"I learnt how to ski here and have spent every winter riding at Cardrona since I could walk," he said.

"To be able to give back to the industry with the resort that has supported me for so long is really amazing.

"It’s really cool to be able to throw an event at home for my international and local peers," he said.

The athletes will compete for a share of $28,000 in prize money.
