Dogs coming to town

More than 2000 farmers and hundreds of farm dogs are expected to descend on Wanaka next May for the New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association's national championships.

The competition will be held at Alpha Burn Station from May 28 to June 2.

The association's Otago centre will be hosting the event.

Otago centre promotions officer Peter Anderson said yesterday it would be 20 years since the national dog trials were last held in Wanaka but South Island championships have been held more recently at Mt Iron.

"It is a great opportunity for Wanaka to have a bit of a showcase. I would say there would be about 250 dogs in each event and maybe a couple of thousand people. It is at a good time of the year, before skiing starts and there's no holidays about then, so there should be plenty of accommodation," Mr Anderson said.
