The club is for the wives of Rotary Club members and, while the main focus is women getting together and ‘‘having fun'', the members also do a considerable amount of fundraising work, which benefits many Queenstown people and occasionally those from further afield as well.
Treasurer Nova Henderson has been a member of the club for about 18 years. She said the idea behind it was quite straightforward.
‘‘It's a group of ladies who have meetings and speakers and enjoy each other's company and do some interesting things and raise some money along the way,'' Mrs Henderson said.
Fundraising efforts by the 36-strong group of women include selling roses, catering, organising luncheons and holding a stall at the Arrowtown Festival selling jams, baking, chutneys and various other home products - the main annual fundraiser.
In the latest round of donations, the Inner Wheel Club gave $500 to Plunket for a measuring wheel, $500 to the Queenstown Library for talking books, $500 to Abbeyfield Wakatipu rest-home for additional lighting such as reading lamps, and $234 to Hospice Southland. Another series of grants will be distributed by the group around the middle of the year.
‘‘It's nice to be able to have fun and raise some money as well,'' Mrs Henderson said.
