The 33-year-old flew out of the resort on Sunday to help Japan prepare for its tie against Germany next weekend.
His charges will be up against Jan-Lennard Struff, with whom he reached the semifinals of his first grand slam, the Australian Open, in 2018.
"Whoever’s playing the doubles, it’ll be my job to get them ready," says McLachlan, who performed the same role in Japan’s successful tie against the United Kingdom in February.
The doubles specialist, who won seven ATP titles, $2.5million in prize money and a career-high world ranking of 18 during his 10 years on tour, switched his allegiance to his mum’s home country in 2017.
He went on to represent Japan at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and in Davis Cup, playing alongside its current captain, Go Soeda.
In the absence of world No.3 Alexander Zverev — who’s opted out of the tie — Struff will be Germany’s best player, he says.
"I’m not sure if he’ll be playing the doubles, but he’ll be playing the singles for sure. It’ll be really cool to see him again."
With Zverev out, Japan has a much better chance of winning, he says.
Since retiring early last year, McLachlan’s been a stay-at-home dad to his 1-year-old daughter, Jojo, while wife Georgia has been building a real estate career.
"Jojo’s been awesome, so much fun, and definitely keeping me very busy. It’s been nice to be in one place for a while."
