One of the contestants in the 2011 Michael Hill International Violin Competition has released an atmospheric classical music video on YouTube.

New Yorker Arianna Warsaw-Fan, now of Montreal, competed in the Queenstown-based competition in June. She told the Queenstown Times this week she plays with cellist Meta Weiss in the eight-minute production, which was shot in her home city.

"We wanted to create something that would engage new audiences, so the format is closer to a pop music video than your average classical music video, but, of course, the music is unaltered," Warsaw-Fan said.

The piece is titled The Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia.

Husband-and-wife team Roderick Hill directed the video and Caitlin Ward designed the set and costumes.
