A fundraising drive to pay for a new four-wheel-drive ambulance for Wanaka St John has reached its $180,000 target, courtesy of a $20,000 boost from the Wanaka Golf Club's annual Charity Golf Classic tournament during the weekend.

The three-day Hirequip Charity Golf tournament finished on Sunday, and at a prizegiving/auction held after the event, Wanaka St John chairman Phill Hunt thanked the golf club organisers for their generosity.

St John has spent the past 12 months raising funds for the ambulance and having reached the $180,000 target, the vehicle should be in Wanaka in time for the start of the ski season, Mr Hunt said.

About 45% of the total funds raised had come from Wanaka sources, he said.

"It's yet another sign of the great community we have here," Mr Hunt said.

Golf tournament convener Bill Hore said organisers were "blown away ... again" by the money raised at the event.

The loyalty shown by sponsors and teams who had been involved in all seven of the charity golf tournaments run since 2003, were behind the event's success, he said.

The tournament's winning team was made up of Mr Hore, Grant Christie, Tony Brent, and Russell Shaw, all of Wanaka, while Wanaka women Sue Collinson, Bobby Shore, Gail Diack, and Nora Hastings, triumphed in the female competition.
