A re-established Otago Regional Council office in Queenstown might be located at Frankton.

During yesterday's draft annual plan hearings in Queenstown, chairman Stephen Woodhead said its first preference was for a shared office with the Queenstown Lakes District Council, but it had no room available.

While nothing was confirmed, Cr Woodhead said it was considering office space ``probably leased, probably in the Frankton area''.

``It makes a lot of sense.''

The suggestion of a return to Queenstown is yet to get council endorsement.

But Cr Woodhead said it had been suggested a Queenstown office would probably have one or two permanent staff.

Staff from elsewhere would be able to work there temporarily.

Alastair Porter, the managing director of Frankton developer and land owner Remarkables Park Ltd, said the company would be happy to help the council into a short-term lease.

He also suggested a Civil Defence emergency management centre be based in Frankton, as it would be close to the airport and hospital, and on high ground, less vulnerable to flooding.
