Twelve Wakatipu High School girls impressed at the national secondary schools waka ama champs — in a values-based sport based on traditional Pacific outrigger canoes.
The under-19 Wakatipu Waka Ama double hull crew — two crews of six joined together — won silver at the Rotorua event, competing against current world medallists.
Rotorua Boys’ High School paddlers acknowledged their performance with a haka during the podium presentation.
Wakatipu was one of only two South Island schools at the event which rivals the secondary schools Maadi Cup regatta in size.
The girls have been paddling for two years under the guidance of veteran competitor, Queenstown Frances Piacun.
