Police ask drivers not to be dangerous

Police in Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago are urging drivers to be patient after receiving more than 25 bad driving complaints in 24 hours.

Senior Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said units had responded to "multiple" calls from members of the public.

By 1pm yesterday officers had received 26 calls and attended five crashes — one serious.

He said poor driving behaviours included overtaking on dangerous spots, slow driving, crossing the centre line, tailgating, swerving and speed.

"We have a lot of visiting drivers to our region and we want all drivers to be patient.

"Roads are going to be busy and people need to take their time, they need to concentrate and relax. We want to make sure people get to their destination safely."

He assured road users police would respond to all calls.

Snr Sgt Watt said the incidents had been noted across the district, from Glenorchy, Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell and Tarras.

Anecdotally, he confirmed police over the festive period received about 15 calls per day in response to bad driving.

He asked local drivers to be courteous on the road and understanding towards others.
