Queenstown stabbing: Man to undergo surgery

Police have confirmed a Queenstown man was stabbed at Lake Hayes Estate on Sunday night, and three people could have been involved.

Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis, of Queenstown, said the 27-year-old victim was undergoing surgery today in Dunedin Hospital and remained in a "serious but stable'' condition.

The man suffered puncture wounds in the chest during the assault, which occurred on Lochnagar Dr about 9.30pm.

A weapon had not been found.

"Members of the public have been helping us with our inquiry, but we're still interested in information from anyone in that area in relation to vehicles seen coming or leaving into the street between about 9.30pm and 10pm.

"There may have been up to three people in a vehicle that was seen in the area.

Asked if there were any gang links to the assault, Sen Sgt Inglis said police did not believe so "at this stage''.

"But it's of grave concern to us when there's any sort of stabbing or serious violent crime like this in Queenstown.''
