On Saturday morning, the Night’n Day Rainbow Run returns to Frankton, officially launching Queenstown council’s annual Summerdaze programme.

The Rainbow Run, which starts at Frankton Recreation Reserve at 11am, is organised by Sport Central and supported by council, and takes participants on a 3km jaunt — by the end of it, after passing through five colour stations, they’ll become their own works of art.

Sport Central community sport adviser Jo Knight says the local fire brigade will also be on hand to douse participants near the start of the run to help the colours stick, while volunteers and supporters will join the council in staffing the stations.

"I challenge friends, family and flatmates to get together, dress up in black or white, and have a blast," she says.

Meantime, council community partnerships adviser Marie Schmidt says the Summerdaze programme — now in its sixth year — is about community connection and enjoying the beauty of the district.

Other events this summer include the Picnic in the Park series, being held between February 3 and March 4, which will feature free barbecues, a games trailer, sports activities, face painting and a library pop-up tent, while elected members will also be present to discuss topics of interest with residents — dates for picnics will be confirmed next month.

The Teddy Bears Picnic, featuring the ‘Stride, Ride and Slide’ mini-triathlon for children aged between 2 and 6, entertainment, games and crafts is also returning to Queenstown on January 25.
