The referendum on a proposed visitor levy in the Queenstown Lakes district closes at noon today.
The council's electoral officer, Jane Robertson, said just over 35% of eligible residents and ratepayers had cast their vote by mid-morning yesterday.
The final date for posting votes was May 30, but they could be delivered to the council's offices in Queenstown and Wanaka before noon. An indicative result would be announced about 1pm, Mrs Robertson said.
The three-week, non-binding referendum will indicate the level of support for a 5% charge on the costs of accommodation paid by visitors. The revenue would be used to fund visitor-related infrastructure and services in the district.
The Government will consider the result in deciding whether to introduce legislation enabling the levy.
