Under new organisers, Saturday’s Arrowtown Auto Show, on the primary school’s grounds, is being preceded for the first time by a ‘Friday Night Cruise’ around Arrowtown streets.

A fundraiser for the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade, the cruise — featuring classics, hot rods, modern cars, utes and motorbikes — takes off at 6.30pm from the Butel Park corner opposite Millbrook Resort, where it also finishes.

Residents along the route are being encouraged to bring their chair or couch on to their front lawn, fetch a beverage and watch the parade.

Then, on Saturday, the auto show runs from 10am till 3pm with gold coin donations, as well as car registrations, all going to the school.

About 200 entries have been received in categories including classic, modern, vintage, hot rods and motorbikes.

At 1.30pm there’ll be a huge auction, called by auctioneer Richard Stringer, featuring major items donated by local businesses.

Committee member Geoff Andrew says they’ve been "overwhelmed" by what’s been donated.

Proceeds will be split between the school and fire brigade.

Then, at 2pm, prizes for the best vehicle in each category will be handed out.

Andrew says the organisers are very excited about the weekend’s events.

"In a town born of gold, you’re going to see some gold driving around the streets [tomorrow] and you’re going to see some gold parked up at Arrowtown School on Saturday."

He says both causes are very worthy — "and that’s why we’re doing it, why we took it over, because otherwise it was just going to disappear".
