Petrol station to reopen in June

A project to upgrade Glenavy's petrol station is well under way.

Allied Petroleum, which bought the station two years ago, starting demolishing the station on April 18.

Marketing manager Brett Haldane said the entire station, from its in-ground tanks to its structure above ground, would be replaced.

"For improved safety, there will be separate forecourt areas for light and heavy vehicles, and better access to and from State Highway 1.

"We also wanted to add additional tank storage to make possible the availability of a new product at the pump.''

Construction was going smoothly so far on the $1 million project.

The new site would be unmanned and fuel would be purchased through a card payment terminal.

"The fuel stop ensures long-term access to fuel for the local community, and it's also a convenient stopping point for passing motorists and commercial fleet operators.''

The site would offer three types of fuel: 91 octane, 95 octane unleaded and diesel, and a new exhaust fluid required by some diesel engines.

As reported in the Otago Daily Times, the Glenavy Volunteer Fire Brigade had complained about the lack of notice about the work, but that had been the only negative feedback received.

Allied Petroleum hoped to open the site to the public in mid-June.
