One person is dead after an accident involving a quad bike near Timaru today.

A police spokeswoman said police were called to a property in Hamiltons Rd, about 35km inland from Timaru in the Maungati area, about 11.55am.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews from Timaru, St Andrews and Washdyke were sent to the property after St John requested assistance.

The incident was first reported as a motor vehicle accident, he said.

The Washdyke and Timaru crews were stood down while en route, and the St Andrews crew assisted at the scene.

Police remained at the property at this afternoon.

The death has been referred to the Coroner and WorkSafe.

"As we are investigating we are unable to provide any further information,'' WorkSafe said in a media release.
