Armed police called to Milton property

A man was taken into custody after armed police were called over an incident involving a firearm in Milton.

The Armed Offender Squad and local police were called to a rural property in Barnes Rd, Circle Hill, at 11pm yesterday where they found a 56-year-old man brandishing a firearm.

Earlier reports the man had fired towards another person at the place were not correct, and no shots had been fired during the incident, Southern District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Brian Benn told the Otago Daily Times this morning.

More firearms were found at the property, and police left the scene at 2.30am, Snr Sgt Benn said.

While no charges had been laid, further inquiries were taking place in Milton today.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
