Aurecon a finalist

The new boiler at the Finegand meatworks is in the running for another industry award.

Consulting engineer Aurecon is among finalists in the Association of Consulting Engineers' Innovate NZ awards of excellence 2011 for its work on the boiler project at Finegand.

The bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) boiler uses the plant's by-product and waste to generate steam, rather than simply relying on coal as the main fuel.

The boiler stands 18m high with a 40m stack.

Aurecon provided technical advice and project management services and was involved in overseeing the commissioning and performance testing for the completed plant.

Energy for Industry and Silver Fern Farms worked together to develop the project and it could now be used at other sites and, potentially, to manage other problematic sludge or bio-solids.

Silver Fern Farms and Energy For Industry also won the EECA Energywise Awards in 2009 for the BFB boiler.

The Innovate NZ awards, organised by the Association of Consulting Engineers NZ (ACENZ) recognise innovation in consulting engineering, both in the structures or processes developed and in the means of providing engineering services to the client.

The winners of the awards will be announced on August 6.
