Belly dancing for health

Belly dancing and better parenting is on the menu for this month's Clutha district community wellness programme.

The art of belly dancing has proved popular as a form of exercise, with all size bellies suitable.

A belly dancing session will be held at the Balclutha Parents Centre rooms on August 22 from 7.30pm.

Belly dancing is the last vestige of goddess worship in the Middle East and is in danger of becoming extinct.

It began as ritual for childbirth preparation.

During this time, many societies were matriarchal, and belly dancing was performed by women for women.

Another community wellness seminar will be given by parenting adviser Nigel Latta, who tours nationwide giving tips on how to raise children.

He will speak at a function at the Clutha Valley Community Centre on Thursday at 7.30pm.

A free bus will run from Balclutha.

Anyone interested should book as soon as possible.

Sport Clutha co-ordinator Tiny Carruthers will run an evening where sports club can assess their "fitness" and look at ways to recruit and retain volunteers, tips on meeting procedures and the roles of office-bearers.

This will be held at the Milton Senior Citizens rooms on August 27 at 7.30pm.

Other events include Toy Library Awareness Week, from today until Sunday, an everyday first aid course, which is free to the public, on August 23, and a session on helping resolve conflict in families.

This meeting will be held in Balclutha on Wednesday.

Anyone wanting more information or to book should contact the Clutha Information Centre.
