Bike track wanted at Moore Park

Milton's promotions group is hoping to build a children's cycle track at a town park.

Milton Area Promotions told the Clutha District Council it wanted the track at Moore Park.

It sent the council more than 70 signatures from individuals and community groups, schools and the Milton police station supporting the project.

Moore Park is a large grass area bordered by Cowper, Johnson, Abercrombie and Spenser Sts which is popular with children and teenagers and features a skate park, basketball hoop, and playground.

Milton Area Promotions president Selwyn Wilkinson said members looked at other cycle tracks in Otago to get ideas.

"We've done a lot of work at the park and thought a cycle track would be a great idea. We're just trying to do something for the kids."

The group estimated the project could cost about $100,000. It hoped to fund the track through grants.

The council's district asset committee recommended that the full council approve the track's development, and suggested the group factor further development of the existing skate park into its plans, because other townships had experienced a demand for larger skate parks.

The proposal will be considered by the full council at its next meeting on November 3.
