An Invercargill woman has captured on video the first eight minutes of a police pursuit which started at Balclutha and ended near Mataura on Sunday.

Invercargill resident Andi Smyth posted a video, starting north of Balclutha, to Facebook which showed a police vehicle following a Honda Odyssey.

The police car's siren and lights were going before two other police vehicles joined in the pursuit and attempted to ``box'' the Honda in.

In the video, Mrs Smyth exclaimed: ``You're kidding me'', when the Honda driver pulled out and collided with one of the three police vehicles

She stopped recording when her husband, Chris Smyth, pulled over.

Mr Smyth told the Otago Daily Times they were ``scared'' they would be caught up in the chase.

``I was quite surprised that the other road users were just oblivious of what to do when they saw the police behind them,'' Mr Smyth said.

Clutha-Taieri Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley, of Balclutha, was involved with the pursuit.

She said police were notified of the driver of a vehicle acting suspiciously at Milton. The vehicle was later seen in Balclutha by a police traffic unit about 2.20pm.

The driver failed to pull over and continued to evade police out of the town.

Snr Sgt Fairley said the driver kept mostly to the speed limit, but after he ``rammed'' one of the police vehicles in the pursuit, he allegedly reached up to 130kmh.

About six police units were involved in the chase, including some from Gore.

Spikes were used on the vehicle on Old Coach Rd, near Mataura, about 3.20pm. The driver continued to drive erratically with deflated tyres.

The vehicle was forced to the left-hand side of the road by police at Mataura, Snr Sgt Fairley said.

The 42-year-old male driver, of Southland, was charged with failing to stop for police, reckless driving and excess breath-alcohol.

He appeared in Invercargill District Court yesterday.
