Past and present students of Blue Mountain College in Tapanui are being invited to celebrate half a century of the school’s history when it marks its 50th anniversary on March 20-21, 2026.

Organisers say the milestone will honour the college’s unique identity since it opened in 1976, replacing the former Tapanui District High School.

"This is 50 years of it just being Blue Mountain," reunion committee secretary and teacher Janine Venz said.

Mrs Venz, who was pupil at the college and now taught there, said the reunion weekend would offer plenty of opportunities for old classmates and staff to reconnect.

"The Friday night’s going to be a get together and Saturday will be the photos and the open day and then finish with a meal and a social evening ... And we’ll have tours of the school and photographs and lots of memorabilia on display."

She said Sunday would be open for visitors to explore local attractions.

"People can organise their own activities in West Otago and make the most what we have here, like Whiskey Gully, Black Gully and the Vintage Museum."

Interest was already strong, with 401 people following the upcoming reunion on social media, 130 of whom had signalled their interest ahead of registrations opening.

Former principal Lindy Cavanagh Monaghan was working to compile a commemorative booklet, while former staff member Gloria McHutchon was helping to contact past teachers.

The reunion committee hoped the event might even spark the beginnings of a new alumni group for the school community.

"We just thought we’d get a committee together to see if there was enough interest in celebrating the event, and we seem to have enough," Mrs Venz said.
