Lindsay and Joyce McCall, who met as teenagers at a Saturday night dance, yesterday celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Originally from Waikoikoi, Mr McCall met his future bride at a dance in Popotunoa, near Clydevale. Joyce Anderson was just 14 at the time.

Neither can remember exactly why they fell in love, but they put it down to a shared love of dancing.

It was three years before Mr McCall proposed - he had been thinking about it for a while, but had to wait for Mrs McCall to "get a bit older", he said.

They went out for a walk one day, and Mr McCall popped the question to Miss Anderson in the neighbour's paddock.

They were married at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Gore on November 15, 1950.

Three sons followed - Robin (now 57), Barry (55), and Tony (42).

After 60 years together, the pair are still good friends and enjoy each other's company.

"We still have our separate interests," Mr McCall (84) said.

"I'm keen on tramping, and Joyce is into her country music, and we both play golf."

Asked what advice they had for a long and happy marriage, Mr McCall replied: "Perseverance, and give-and-take."

Mrs McCall (79) did not think there was a secret to a happy marriage.

"You just love each other."
