An extended glass ban is likely to be introduced along Kaka Point's main beach this summer.
In the past, a brief ban lasting about four days, coinciding with New Year's Eve celebrations at the coastal settlement, has been in effect.
However, the Clutha District Council is poised to accept a request from the Kaka Point Community Group to prohibit all glass on beaches for the months of December and January.
Group spokeswoman Lisa Lyall hoped the longer ban would stop glass "making its way on to our beach and our grassy areas" - two key places where families congregate over summer.
Group chairman Ken Stephens said the community was proactive in providing family events and entertainment over the summer period and it wanted the ban to keep the foreshore area tidy and safe during that time.
The council's regulatory services committee accepted the suggestion and the recommendation will go to the full council on October 22.
The committee recommended the glass ban be imposed on the foreshore area along the Esplanade from the intersection with the Rata St to the intersection with Karoro Creek Rd - a distance of about 3km.
The ban, if adopted, would run from December 1 this year to January 31, 2010.
A nearby street in central Kaka Point - Moana St - will be included in the glass ban from December 30 to January 2 only.
Council planning and environment manager Murray Brass said people could still enjoy canned beer or wine in casks.
