A century and a-half after their forebears arrived in South Otago, the Clark family gathered in Milton for a weekend of memories.

The descendants of one of Milton's founding fathers returned to the Bruce area to mark the 150th anniversary of Jasper and Agnes Clark's arrival from Scotland on Jura, which docked in Dunedin in 1858.

Appropriately, there were almost 150 registrations for the sesquicentennial cele-brations, which began with early registrations on Friday and finished with a church service, tree planting ceremony and lunch yesterday.

Jasper Clark bought a section of land in the Tokomairiro area for 25 and then bought a second lot with his brother, Henry.

The same piece of land - some 140ha - is still farmed by the family.

The farms were on the itinerary over the weekend and dozens of people made the most of the opportunity to visit them.

One of the reunion organisers, Catherine Clark, said planning for the event began last Christmas but all the hard work was worth it, when so many descendants made the effort to attend.

Some travelled from as far away as Australia for the gathering.

The main celebration, on Saturday, included photographs, a tour of Clark relatives' graves in the Milton Cemetery, and tours of the family's various landholdings around Milton.

Yesterday's activities included a church service and the planting of a golden totara at Taylor Park, followed by lunch.
