A hundred keen competitors donned their running shoes and dragged out their bikes to take part in the Lawrence Spring Duathlon on Saturday.

Co-organiser Margaret Larsen said most competitors entered on the day, encouraged by the fine weather.

''Everyone completed the course and came away smiling. Great atmosphere.''

The duathlon consists of a 3km walk or run from the gymkhana grounds at Weatherstons through the nearby brewery grounds and a 12km bike ride through Lawrence, followed by a 1.5km walk or run.

The majority of competitors were ''first timers'', from across Otago, she said.

Alan Thomson was the first man across the finish line and Kylie Lyders was the first woman. The Lawrence Boxing Club took the team title.

About six people form the main organising committee for the annual event, which started in 2010. The event is supported by volunteers on the day.
