Kaitangata wants an activity and sports centre with a good cultural base, according to a public workshop.
About 16 people attended the gathering this week to hear the results of a feasibility study that looked at the viability of improving the Kaitangata Town Hall to make it a better-equipped facility available to a wider range of community groups.
Kaitangata and Districts Promotions co-ordinator Jean Proctor said the community response had been largely positive, and feedback from this week's meeting would guide the groups and others looking to confirm upgrade plans for the hall.
The hall is mainly used for school concerts, funerals, Anzac services and social functions.
It was suggested special nets could be used to divide an extended hall so more than one large group could use it at the same time.
Film evenings, tea dances, and a community gymnasium were among the potential uses considered for an improved hall.
Mrs Proctor said some at the workshop were worried the economic climate might hinder the project.
"It was voiced that a community centre facility needs to be functional versus flash. That some ideas are not that costly and the project may be taken in small steps at a time towards common goals."
The workshop agreed an activity/sports centre with a good cultural base would contribute to the "community hub" being formed in the area around the town hall.
