More than 100 riders took part in the 30th anniversary of the Hasler Memorial Motocross event in Balclutha yesterday.

Hosted by the South Otago Motorcycle Club, the event was created 30 years ago to honour the late Ken and Richard Hasler who were killed in a car crash.

The pair were keen motorcycle enthusiasts and Ken also helped form the club and track.

Club member Jo Bond said more than 100 racers took part in the event yesterday held at the riverside reserve racing track in Balclutha.

The day was ''fantastic'' and everything ran smoothly, she said.

There were no major injuries or broken bones.

The club was also ''honoured'' to have professional motocross competitor Ben Townley take part in the race.

Mr Townley, of Tauranga, is well-known in motocross circles, having won several international championships.

He placed first in the Hasler Memorial Trophy race ahead of Sam Cuthbertson and Madison Latta.
