Negotiating a fresh contract to continue its work in the community is the key challenge facing the Milton Community Health Trust, its annual meeting heard this week.

The organisation, which provides primary healthcare to the Milton and Bruce districts, reported a modest surplus for the 2009 year.

Chairman Malcolm Flett declined to disclose the size of the surplus, but said it was quite an achievement considering the difficult financial times and limited resources.

Negotiations to renew the trust's contract with the Otago District Health Board have been delayed, forcing a rollover until December 31.

Mr Flett said he was confident the trust's "impeccable record" in fulfilling its contractual obligations would cement it as the preferred provider of Milton services.

Nurse manager Dale Wyber said board members continued to provide a significant voluntary service.

"They provide important support and behind-the-scenes advice and information and have a very high expectation that we will continue to provide a quality service which is delivered locally, regardless of what happens elsewhere."

Two trustees, Bruce Vollweiler and Celia Buxton, were re-elected.
