Dust, mud, amazing scenery and a good ride were on offer at the 12th annual Lake to Sea Trail Ride near Milton on Saturday.

Riders on motorcycles, quad bikes and ATVs tackled trails through forestry, farmland, gravel, mud and beach between Milton and the coast.

Jill Allison, one of the organisers, said 745 people took part in the event and some came from as far afield as Christchurch and Invercargill.

Organisers were ''quite relieved'' the course was a lot drier than last year, when riders tackled a muddy trail.

Although numbers were down this year, the trail remained popular with riders, she said.

The ride, known for its variety of terrain and great views, was the 12th annual major fundraiser for Tokomairiro High School. While the final tally was not yet known, it was expected to raise between $20,000 and $25,000.

This year's course for advanced riders and seniors covered up to 140km, from the start behind the Otago Corrections Facility at Milburn to Toko Mouth and return.

More farms were included this year and advanced riders also had a run along Chrystalls Beach.

For juniors and less experienced riders, the course covered about 80km.
