Improvements to the look of Lawrence are close to being finalised as the town cranks up plans to celebrate the 150th anniversary of gold being discovered at nearby Gabriels Gully.
The streetscape 2011 project has been backed by the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board and the 150th anniversary organising committee.
More details of the work were discussed at the board's meeting on Wednesday.
The board has previously confirmed the project and developed priorities with the first choice being to upgrade the entrance to Gabriel's Gully Road which leads from Lawrence through to Gabriels Gully, where Gabriel Read discovered gold in May 1861, sparking the Otago goldrush.
The two main issues to be resolved were staff resourcing and the cost estimates.
