They sold out of sausages in a couple of hours, which was a good indication of how popular the inaugural Kaka Point market day was, organiser Pauline Simpson said.

"It was a great day. We're really thrilled."

She estimated up to 2000 people attended the Saturday market, which was held in front of the community hall. Attendance was heavy for most of the day, she said.

About 44 stallholders took part, offering everything from fresh vegetables and bone carving to wooden toys and gourmet pies.

"Every stallholder had a successful day and were very happy with their sales."

The Kaka Point Community Group sausage sizzle sold out of sausages by about noon and had to get more, she said.

"There was a nice atmosphere, with locals, people from Balclutha, Milton, overseas visitors, the Catlins and Dunedin."

The market might become an annual event, she said.
