A story in the Clutha Leader of May 1 featured Lance Corporal Patrick Duffy, who died at General Hospital, Le Treport, Normandy during World War 1.
Partial remains of Pat Duffy had ended up in Mutter Museum in Philadelphia and were recently returned to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and thence to Mont Huon Cemetery where they were interred in his grave.
I have researched Pat Duffy for a book on men who worked at the Piha Mill on the West Coast of Auckland.
Pat arrived at Piha by 1911 and enlisted from there.
He was a tall, good-looking young man who was injured twice before his third and fatal injury.
In 2018 I visited Pat’s grave at Mont Huon Cemetery and laid an Anzac poppy.
I would like to hear from any of Pat’s relatives, who could carry the names Junker or Sheed, to learn more about this young man, at s-coney@xtra.co.nz
