The 47-year-old South Otago man was struck on the head at an Invercargill bar in the early hours of May 1 after watching the Highlanders play the Brumbies.
Mr Henry, or ''Mok'', was taken to the intensive care unit.
He has been treated over the past few months at the rehabilitation ward at Wakari Hospital for severe head injuries.
When Simon Cleverly, of Balclutha, learnt of the severity of Mr Henry's injuries, he set up a givealittle page to help with Mr Henry's medical costs.
Mr Cleverly said Mr Henry was a ''genuine good bugger'' who would give anyone the shirt off his back if they needed it.
He was ''pretty gutted'' to hear about Mr Henry's injuries.
The givealittle page set up by Mr Cleverley, which raised $3460 online, was a way of helping Mr Henry ''get back to where he should be''.
More money was given in collection jars at local businesses, which brought the total to over $4000.
''He's got mates everywhere 'cause everyone likes him,'' Mr Cleverley said.
Mr Henry's partner, Villane Foster, said she did not know whether he was going to live or die when he was first taken to hospital.
The money donated to Mr Henry showed there were still people out there who cared about him, Ms Foster said.
''It's amazing,'' she said.
Mr Henry's injuries have changed things but it was important for him to return back to work as soon as possible.
However, it was unclear how long it would be before he was fully recovered.
Mr Henry said he was overwhelmed and humbled by the money donated and wanted to thank everyone for their support.
Detective Regan Fahey, of Invercargill, said police were still investigating the incident and could not comment further.
