The future of the Kaitangata War Memorial Hall will be discussed at a public meeting this evening.
The hall's future is unclear because of increasing maintenance costs.
The hall, owned and operated by the Clutha District Council, costs Kaitangata ratepayers about $31 to $45 each a year.
A council newsletter to residents stated the hall was facing $170,000 of maintenance work just to keep it open.
The work would be loan-funded, seeing resulting in a rise in rates for Kaitangata ratepayers.
Income from the use of the hall over the past five years has ranged from $200 to $1200 a year, while hall expenditure - insurance, electricity, cleaning and repair costs ranged from $13,000 to $26,985 a year.
Kaitangata District and Promotions president Beau Williams said a public meeting earlier this year had discussed what to do with the hall. However, not many residents had attended and he hoped more do so today.
"It's a war memorial hall and the community needs to get in behind it."
Several years ago, Kaitangata District and Promotions commissioned a feasibility report which suggested the toilets be revamped and the kitchen moved downstairs away from the stage.
The newsletter said that upgrading the hall to provide a new kitchen, toilets and meeting rooms would cost about $600,000.
•The public meeting will be held at 7.30pm today in the Kaitangata War Memorial Hall.
