Native seedlings planted

Clutha River conservation area Rekos Point, near Luggate, is the latest site to benefit from a mass planting of native seedlings as part of a revegetation project.

More than 25 volunteers recently planted about 300 native shrubs at the point, as part of an extensive landscaping plan along the Clutha River being developed by the Department of Conservation and Central Otago Lakes Forest and Bird Society.

Luggate Community Association and Rotary volunteers worked alongside staff from Wanaka store Flooring Xtra, which was involved with fundraising and donating materials for the planting project.

Doc Wanaka area spokeswoman Annette Smith said the project was a local initiative to wrap up Conservation Week.

The planting site encircles the car park entrance to the Upper Clutha River Track on Shortcut Rd and is a popular starting destination for walkers and mountain bikers accessing the scenic area.

The planting project is part of a "Restoring New Zealand's Forest Floor" environmental programme being developed by NZ Forest and Bird Society and Flooring Xtra New Zealand, which aims to plant 15,000 native shrubs across the country.

The Rekos Point project is the first one undertaken in the Upper Clutha region as part of the "forest floor" scheme.
